The Netherlands – The Netherlands became the first country to legalize same-
sex marriage. The legislation gave same-sex couples the right to marry divorce and

7. Sweden – In April 2009, the Swedish parliament gave a green flag to gay marriages
and the law allows gays and lesbians to marry in both religious and civil ceremonies.
8. Portugal – In the year 2008, campaigners in Portugal pushed harder for same sex
marriage and in 2010 Portugal became the eighth country to legalize same-sex
marriage. The gay marriage law in Portugal does not give married same-sex couples
the right to adopt children.
9. Iceland – Iceland legalized gay marriage on June 27, 2010 and on the same day
when legalization went into effect; Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir had her
registered partnership changed to a marriage.
10. Argentina – Argentina was the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex
marriage and also the third predominantly Catholic country on this list.
11. Mexico – December 21, 2009 was the day when gay marriage was legalized to be
performed within the city of Mexico. Here any couple can get married in the capital
and that marriage is legal throughout the country.
